Sara Elizabeth Photography — Newborn Photographer in Boise, Nampa, and Caldwell

Welcoming a new baby home is one of the sweetest and most emotional seasons of your life — and I truly believe these early days deserve to be remembered exactly as they are.
My newborn sessions are calm, baby-led, and designed to feel simple, cozy, and relaxed. You don’t need a perfect house or a perfect routine. You just need your baby, your people, and a little bit of natural light.
Here’s how to prepare for your in-home newborn session.
1. Keep Baby Warm and Fed
The two things newborns love most? Warmth + a full belly.
Right before I arrive, try to:
- Give baby a full feeding
- Burp well
- Keep them in a soft, easy-to-remove outfit
But don’t stress if timing doesn’t line up — we take breaks as needed and always follow baby’s cues.
2. Warm Up Your Home
Newborns photograph best when they’re cozy and relaxed.
If possible, bump your thermostat a couple degrees about 10 minutes before I arrive.
A warm home helps baby settle beautifully for swaddled and snuggly moments.
3. Choose 1–2 Simple Outfit Options
You don’t need a closet full of options — just a couple soft, neutral pieces.
Great choices include:
A simple, neutral onesie
Soft little pants with bare feet (I love showing off tiny toes!)
A baby nightgown
A textured or simple swaddle
A sweet, neutral headband or hat (optional)
Tip: Avoid footed pajamas. They hide those adorable feet and tend to bunch in photos.
4. Know You Don’t Have to Clean the Whole House
This is the part moms worry about most — and I promise it’s not necessary.
I usually photograph in:
The nursery
Your living room
Your bedroom (especially the bed for family snuggles)
Just tidy the areas we’ll use, but don’t deep-clean or feel pressure to make everything perfect.
I’ll help move items, straighten small spaces, and create simple, distraction-free backgrounds.
Note: For lifestyle newborn sessions, I don’t bring props or setups — the beauty of the session comes from your real, lived-in home.
5. Prepare Siblings (If You Have Them)
Let them be themselves — shy, excited, wiggly, curious… all of it is normal.
A few helpful tips:
Have a snack ready
Keep a comfort item nearby
Let them participate at the beginning of the session
I’m very patient with little ones, and we go at their pace.
6. Keep Parent Outfits Simple and Soft
For parents, neutrals photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your baby.
Think:
- Cream
- White
- Sage
- Muted pinks
- Soft blue
- Tan
- Simple textures
Avoid bold patterns, strong colors, or large logos — soft and simple always photographs timelessly.
7. Expect a Calm, Baby-Led Session
Every baby is different — some sleep the whole time, others stay awake and curious. Both are perfect.
We take breaks for:
- Feeding
- Diaper changes
- Snuggles
- Calming moments
Your baby sets the pace. My goal is to capture your family’s real connection and the tiny details that matter most.
Final Thoughts
Your newborn session shouldn’t feel stressful. It should feel warm, meaningful, and honest — a little pause in the middle of this wild, beautiful season.
Whether your home is spotless or a little lived-in, whether baby sleeps or wiggles, your photos will reflect your love, your connection, and the tenderness of these fleeting early days.
If you're expecting and want to book an in-home newborn session in Boise, Nampa, or Caldwell, I would love to capture this milestone for you.
