There is something extra special about celebrating a first birthday, but celebrating two little ones turning one at the same time makes it even more memorable.

I recently photographed this sweet twin first birthday milestone and cake smash session in Kuna, Idaho. Instead of a traditional studio session, we created a relaxed in home lifestyle experience that allowed these twins to play, explore and celebrate in a familiar environment.

One of my favorite things about first birthday photography is that these sessions can be customized to fit your family. Whether you prefer an in home lifestyle session or a studio setup, the goal is always the same: documenting your baby's personality during this exciting milestone.

First Birthday Photos Are More Than Just Cake

When many parents hear the words "cake smash," they immediately think about frosting everywhere.

While the cake portion is always fun, I actually love starting first birthday sessions with milestone portraits before we ever bring out the cake.

Babies are often happiest and most engaged at the beginning of the session, which gives us an opportunity to capture genuine smiles and sweet interactions before little hands get messy.

For this session, we started with:

  • Twin milestone portraits together
  • Individual one year old portraits
  • Simple props that kept the focus on the babies
  • A fun cake smash to celebrate turning one

These images often become some of a family's favorite keepsakes because they beautifully document this fleeting stage before toddlers become busy little explorers.

Why I Love Photographing Twins

One of my favorite parts of this session was watching each twin's personality shine.

Even at one year old, siblings already have their own unique expressions, interests and reactions.

One child may be adventurous and curious while the other is observant and calm. Photographing twins is always such a fun challenge because no two moments are ever exactly the same.

I love creating a mix of images that showcase their individual personalities while also capturing the beautiful connection they already share as siblings.

Lifestyle Cake Smash Sessions Can Happen In Your Home

A lot of parents don't realize that first birthday sessions don't always have to happen in a studio.

Lifestyle cake smash sessions can be done right in your own home, which can be especially helpful for one year olds who are most comfortable in a familiar environment.

At home sessions create a relaxed experience for everyone and often make transitions between outfits and activities much easier.

While this session was photographed in their home, I also offer studio milestone and cake smash sessions for families who prefer a more traditional setting.

There is no right or wrong choice. Together we can decide which option best fits your family.

The Cake Smash Is Always The Most Fun

Once the cake comes out, the session takes on a life of its own.

Some babies dive right in while others take their time investigating every sprinkle and every piece of frosting.

That unpredictability is part of what makes cake smash photography so fun and memorable.

The goal is never perfection. The goal is documenting genuine reactions, silly expressions and all of the little moments that happen naturally.

This stage only lasts for such a short time, which makes these photos even more meaningful years later.

When Should You Schedule First Birthday Photos?

I recommend scheduling first birthday milestone and cake smash sessions about four to six weeks before your child's birthday celebration.

This gives families plenty of time to receive their final gallery and use the images for:

  • Birthday invitations
  • Party decorations
  • Social media announcements
  • Keepsake albums
  • Birthday displays

Planning ahead also allows flexibility for outfit choices, themes and coordinating siblings if needed.
