A Simple Guide for Expecting Parents in Boise & the Treasure Valley
If you’re expecting a baby (congratulations, mama!), there are so many exciting things to prepare for—tiny clothes, car seats, cravings, and all the daydreaming about who your little one will be. One question that often pops up somewhere between glucose tests and assembling the bassinet is:
“When should I book my newborn photographer?”
As a Boise newborn photographer serving families across Caldwell, Nampa, Meridian, Eagle, and the entire Treasure Valley, I get this question almost every week. And the honest answer is:
🌿 Earlier than you might think.
Booking your newborn photographer before baby arrives ensures that you have a guaranteed spot during the ideal window for those soft, sleepy, beautifully curled newborn images you’ve been dreaming of.
Let’s walk through the best timing and what that process looks like, so you feel informed, confident, and beautifully prepared.
Why Timing Matters for Newborn Photography
Newborn photographs are unique because babies change incredibly fast—faster than any other stage in life. In just a few weeks, their features become more alert, their movements less curled, and their wake windows longer.
Professional newborn sessions are typically scheduled during the “newborn window,” usually between:
🗓 5–21 days after birth
During this short stretch of days, babies are often:
Sleepier (more settled in those cozy, wrapped poses)
Naturally curled from the womb (perfect for snuggly, tucked-in images)
Easier to soothe and swaddle
Less sensitive to brief movement and positioning
Because this window is so brief—and due dates are unpredictable—photographers accept a limited number of newborn clients per month. Once those spots are filled, it becomes very difficult to add additional sessions.
So… When Should You Book?
Most families book their newborn photographer in either the late first trimester or second trimester. A simple, stress-free guideline is:
🟢 Best time to book: 12–28 weeks
(second trimester is the most popular)
🟡 Still okay: 28–34 weeks
(spots may be limited but not impossible)
🔴 Last-minute: 35+ weeks
(still inquire—sometimes babies arrive early or reschedules open space)
If you’re reading this later in pregnancy, please don’t panic. Reach out anyway. I always do my best to accommodate when I can.
Flexible Scheduling for Early, Late, or Surprise Deliveries
Birth is beautifully unpredictable. Babies arrive on their own timeline, and that’s why newborn photographers typically reserve your spot based on your due date and adjust once your little one arrives.
Your session is booked according to your due date, which holds your place on my calendar. Once baby arrives, you’ll simply send me a quick message when you’re able, and we’ll confirm the exact session date based on their arrival and your recovery time, ensuring a relaxed and well-timed experience.
No stress. No pressure. Just a gentle, guided process so you can stay focused on healing, resting, and soaking up those first moments.
What Type of Newborn Session Should You Book?
I offer a few different newborn photography experiences so you can choose a setting that fits your family’s needs and personality. Many families choose between:
✨ Lifestyle In-Home Newborn Sessions
Captured in the comfort of your own home—your couch, the nursery, the soft space where you rock and feed and learn each other. These sessions are relaxed, baby-led, and all about documenting connection.
✨ Studio Newborn Sessions (Caldwell)
A warm, comfortable studio environment designed specifically for newborns, with soft neutral tones, gentle posing, and everything we need for a beautifully polished, cohesive look.
✨ Fresh 48 Hospital Sessions
Perfect for those raw, emotional hours after birth—whether at St. Luke’s, St. Alphonsus, or a birth center.
