Senior year is such an exciting milestone, and one of the questions I get asked most often is:
“When should we book senior photos?”
While fall has traditionally been the most popular season for senior sessions, the truth is there isn’t just one “right” time. I photograph seniors throughout the entire year, including spring and summer, and each season offers something unique depending on your senior’s personality, schedule, and vision.
In fact, I’ve already started receiving senior inquiries and even have spring senior sessions booking, which just shows how much timing can vary from family to family.
So if you’re wondering when to book, here’s a breakdown to help you decide what works best for your senior.
Fall Senior Sessions (The Traditional Favorite)
Fall is the most popular season for senior photos, and for good reason.
Treasure Valley fall colors create a beautiful backdrop, the weather is usually comfortable, and many yearbook deadlines fall in late fall or early winter. Because of this, a lot of seniors plan their sessions between September and November.
If fall is your goal, it’s best to book 3–6 months in advance since calendars fill quickly during peak season.
Summer Senior Sessions
Summer is one of my personal favorite times for senior photos.
We get gorgeous golden evening light, lush greenery, and flexible schedules without school or sports conflicts. Seniors who love the outdoors, fields, rivers, foothills, really shine in summer sessions.
It’s also a great option for families who want photos completed before the busy school year begins.
Spring Senior Sessions
Spring is a season people often overlook, but it can be perfect for two types of seniors.
Early Planners book in spring before senior year begins.
Late Planners sometimes schedule sessions just before graduation.
Either way, spring offers fresh scenery and beautiful natural light.
Booking Time vs. Session Time
One of the biggest misconceptions is that booking and shooting happen at the same time.
Here’s a simple guideline:
Spring sessions → Book in winter
Summer sessions → Book in spring
Fall sessions → Book in spring or early summer
Booking early ensures the best availability and allows time to plan locations, outfits, and details that make the session feel personal.
Designing a Session Around Your Senior’s Personality
While season plays a role, I always encourage families to think beyond timing and focus on what makes their senior unique.
Senior photos should feel like your senior, not like a one-size-fits-all template.
Outdoorsy Seniors
If your senior loves nature, we can plan sessions around foothills, rivers, open fields, or mountain landscapes.
Sports-Involved Seniors
I love incorporating the sports seniors have dedicated so much time to.
We can photograph on their field, in uniform, or with equipment and medals.
Creative & Artistic Seniors
For musicians, dancers, or artists, we can design sessions around their passions.
Style-Focused Seniors
Some seniors build their vision around wardrobe and aesthetics.
Flowy dresses, scarves, boots, and seasonal tones all shape the feel of the session.
Yearbook Deadlines to Keep in Mind
Every high school has different submission deadlines for senior portraits. Some require fall photos, while others allow later submissions.
I always recommend checking early so we can plan your timeline accordingly.
Final Thoughts: There’s No One “Perfect” Time
The best time for senior photos depends on your senior’s personality, interests, and planning style.
Spring works for early or late planners.
Summer offers flexibility and golden light.
Fall provides classic senior scenery.
No matter the season, the goal is to create a session that celebrates who your senior is during this exciting chapter of life.
