Thinking about family photos this fall?

It may seem a little early to start thinking about fall family photos while you're still enjoying summer, but this is actually one of the best times to begin planning.

Booking your session ahead of time gives you more flexibility when choosing a date, allows plenty of time to plan outfits, and helps make the entire experience feel relaxed instead of rushed.

Before you know it, summer will give way to cooler evenings, colorful leaves, and one of the most beautiful seasons in Idaho.

Why is fall such a popular season for family photos?

There's a reason so many families choose fall for their annual portraits.

The weather is usually more comfortable, the light becomes softer earlier in the evening, and the changing leaves create a beautiful natural backdrop without taking attention away from what matters most, your family.

Many families also like having updated portraits before the holidays for gifts, cards, or simply to display in their home.

When should you reserve your session?

If you're hoping for a fall session, I recommend reaching out during July or August.

That doesn't mean your session will take place then, it simply means reserving your date before the busiest weeks of the season arrive.

Most of my fall family sessions take place between late September and late October, depending on the weather, the fall colors, and the look you're hoping for.

Why do photographers recommend booking early?

Fall is one of the shortest photography seasons of the year.

Outdoor sessions are typically scheduled during the hour before sunset, when the light is soft and flattering. Since there are only so many evenings each week—and weekends are especially popular, the calendar can fill more quickly than people expect.

Planning ahead means you have more flexibility and one less thing to think about when life gets busy.

Planning ahead makes everything easier.

One of the best parts about booking early is that it gives you time.

Time to choose outfits.

Time to coordinate schedules.

Time to get excited instead of feeling stressed.

If you aren't sure what to wear or need help deciding on a location, I'm always happy to help. My goal is to make your session feel simple, relaxed, and enjoyable from start to finish.

What if the weather doesn't cooperate?

Fall weather in Idaho can be a little unpredictable, but that's part of its charm.

Some of my favorite sessions have happened on cloudy evenings or with a gentle breeze moving through the trees. Soft, overcast light can create beautiful photographs, and if the weather truly isn't suitable, we'll work together to find the best solution.

Every season is worth remembering.

One of my favorite things about family photography is capturing the little moments that often pass by unnoticed, the way your child reaches for your hand, the laughter you share together, or the personalities that seem to change overnight.

Those are the moments that become the memories we treasure years from now.

If you've been thinking about updating your family photos this fall, I'd love to help you create a session that feels natural, meaningful, and true to your family.
